ABOUT PIP WYNN OWEN
Registered Midwife, IBCLC and Childbirth Educator in Perth
Hi, I’m Pip Wynn Owen, a Perth-based Registered Midwife, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and experienced Childbirth and Early Parenting Educator.
For more than 25 years, I have supported families through pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and the transition into parenthood.
My teaching is independent of any hospital, maternity service or branded birth programme. This gives me the freedom to provide balanced, evidence-based education that reflects current research and focuses on what matters most: helping you understand your options, trust your instincts and make decisions that feel right for you and your family.

REGISTERED MIDWIFE
IBCLC LACTATION CONSULTANT
25+ YEARS EXPERIENCE
INDEPENDENT EDUCATOR
Independent Childbirth Education in Perth
My role is not to tell you where or how you should give birth. It is to help you understand your options and feel confident making decisions that are right for you.
I believe birth education should be centred on you, not shaped by the policies of a particular hospital or the philosophy of a branded program.
My workshops are independently developed and draw on more than 25 years of experience in midwifery, childbirth education, breastfeeding support and early parenting. This allows me to provide balanced, evidence-based information and continually update my teaching as the research evolves.
Whether you are planning to give birth at home, in a birth centre or in hospital, my aim is to help you understand how birth works, ask informed questions and feel respected, supported and involved in the decisions being made.
The Birth of Birth Savvy
Although I was already a midwife and childbirth educator, it was the birth of my fourth child that convinced me of the need for a truly independent childbirth education service in Perth.
At the time, many independent classes appeared to present home birth as the ideal way to give birth. Home birth can be a wonderful choice, but it is not the right or realistic option for every family.
Most women in Perth will give birth in a public or private hospital. I believed they deserved education that could help them have a positive, informed experience wherever they chose to birth.
I wanted to create a service that helped women and their partners understand normal birth, navigate the maternity system and feel confident making decisions, without suggesting that there was only one right place or way to give birth.

My First Three Births
My first three births were straightforward, midwifery-led births in birth centres.
They were positive experiences, yet each time I was left with the feeling that something was missing.
With every pregnancy, I remember thinking:
“Great. Another opportunity to get birth really right.”
I am not sure what version of perfection I was chasing, but afterwards I often felt as though I had somehow failed to reach the elusive “Holy Grail” of birth.
Looking back, I had placed a great deal of trust in the midwives caring for me. I had not yet fully understood the importance of trusting myself.
My Fourth Birth Changed Everything
I was devastated when my fourth pregnancy became obstetric-led. I wondered how I could possibly have the birth I wanted in a more medicalised private hospital setting.
I understood the routine practices that can sometimes interfere with the physiology of labour, but I still questioned whether I would have the confidence to speak up if I disagreed with my obstetrician.
By then, I had spent years working as a childbirth educator in a private hospital. It was time to practise what I had been teaching.
During my early appointments, my obstetrician repeatedly told me that I would probably need a caesarean birth. Rather than accepting this as inevitable, I asked questions, considered the evidence and made decisions based on my own circumstances rather than general assumptions.
My fourth birth became my most positive birth.
I had a three-hour labour and, for the first time, experienced the extraordinary endorphin high that can occur when you feel safe, focused and completely absorbed in labour.
The biggest difference was not simply where I gave birth or what happened during labour.
The biggest difference was that I trusted myself.
I had confidence in my body, confidence in my decisions and the absolute confidence of my husband beside me.
I felt strong, capable and enormously proud of myself.
For the first time following one of my births, I also did not experience postnatal depression.
That experience changed the way I thought about birth and shaped the work I continue to do today.

Areas of Ongoing Study
My professional development spans the interconnected areas of birth, breastfeeding, infant development and early parenting.
Birth Physiology and Pain Science
My ongoing study includes the hormones and physiology of labour, the influence of environment and emotional safety, and contemporary pain science. This helps me explain not only what happens during labour, but why practical strategies such as movement, breathing, relaxation and support can make a meaningful difference.
Breastfeeding and Lactation
I continue to study the physiology of lactation, breastfeeding biomechanics, effective milk transfer and the factors that protect milk production. My teaching reflects current evidence rather than outdated models of positioning and attachment that are still commonly taught.
Infant Sleep and Neurodevelopment
My work in Neuroprotective Developmental Care explores biologically normal infant sleep, sensory needs, circadian rhythms, sleep pressure and early brain development. I help parents understand what is developmentally normal rather than giving them unrealistic expectations about how babies should sleep.
Attachment and Early Parenting
My professional development includes the parental brain, the first 1,000 days, secure attachment, co-regulation and responsive parenting. This knowledge helps parents understand their baby’s cues and trust that responding with warmth and connection supports healthy development.
Emotional Wellbeing, ACT and Birth Trauma
My NDC training included Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and I have also completed additional training with Dr Russ Harris, a leading ACT educator. This approach helps parents notice difficult thoughts and emotions without becoming overwhelmed by them, reconnect with what matters most and respond in ways that align with their values.
My professional development also includes the Clinical Applications of Emotional Freedom Techniques, alongside ongoing study in birth-related fear, emotional wellbeing and trauma-informed care. This informs the way I support parents to prepare emotionally for birth and navigate experiences that may not unfold as expected.
Neurodiversity, Birth and Parenting
I continue to deepen my understanding of how neurodiversity can shape a person’s experience of pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and early parenting. Sensory needs, communication preferences, and responses to unfamiliar or unpredictable environments can all affect how parents experience maternity care.
This knowledge helps me adapt my education and support so parents feel understood, respected and able to prepare in ways that suit their individual needs.
