FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing  is a way of replacing the fear of birthing with the ability to birth in the calm, gentle, peaceful and confident way, no matter what turn your birth takes.

Birth is meant to be an amazing, positive experience because nature wants you to do it again and again!

Our classes will give you the knowledge confidence and tools to work together as a team and get the birth you want.

But will it take away the pain?

We don’t promise no pain, we give you strategies to work with pain.

When you understand what pain is and how to work with it you will be able to cope beautifully with your labour and birth. Read this blog to understand more.

We also use a combination of evidence-based practices that have been shown to be effective in making labour and birth more comfortable and manageable.

We give providing you with a tool box full of wonderful, proven methods of being in control of your labour and birth.

Should my partner attend?

Partners have a BIG role to play in birth.

However, they can feel overwhelmed and helpless.

Our classes provide birth companions with information and skills to be a real part of the birthing process.

I am really passionate about partners having a very important role to play in birth and feedback indicates they really get a lot out of my classes (much more than hospital antenatal class). I recently had a couple having their fourth child do my classes and the partner was really glowing about how much he learned and wished he had known with the other three.

Click the link to watch me get a little bit passionate about the subject on the 9 News Today show.

And finally, here’s what parent Dan had to say: “Hypnobirthing gave me all the knowledge, tools, confidence and positive mindset that I really needed to be an effective and supportive birthing partner when our little boy Ted was born in October. The classes were so much more educational than I could have imagined and the birth was such a team effort as a result. Thanks for Pip!”

When should I start classes?

We recommend starting anywhere between 20 to 35 weeks of pregnancy however, I recommend starting classes with Perth Hypnobirthing & Co sooner rather than later.

The classes will help you build an equal and confident relationship with your care provider. Plus, with research showing a Fear of Childbirth can increase your risk of postnatal depression by 3 times, it is important to start reducing that fear as soon as possible. Starting early means your baby will also benefit from a calm, positive Mum.

However it is never too late to prepare for a calm, positive birth. Read Anna’s story, which shows it is never too late to prepare for a calm, positive birth.

What do I do if I have really, really left it too late for group classes or can’t make it to classes?

If for some reason, the other options don’t meet your needs…

Perhaps you’re over 36 weeks. Perhaps your partner is fly-in fly-out and can’t make a group course. Maybe there are other special circumstances?

It’s not too late! There are always options.

Contact me and we can discuss the possibility of alternate arrangements.

But what if my birth isn’t completely ‘natural’?

I have seen how hard it is to have the birthing experience you want and deserve in a highly medicalised setting.   Our classes can help you block out the negative, unhelpful advice and policies so that you can listen to your body and birth the way you are beautifully designed to do.

However, one of the things I most like about our courses is that they all about preparing you for a calm, positive birth no matter what turn your birth takes. When we are calm, positive and informed we make much better decisions for ourselves and our babies. So that you will know in your heart you had the best birth possible with the situation you were given. Elizabeth’s story is one great example of this.

Does it work?

Hypnobirthing has become increasingly popular in Perth over the last year.

I get many referrals from Midwives working in public and private hospitals all over Perth as they see the difference Hypnobirthing makes. Even a few private obstetricians are recommending their clients look into hypnobirthing.

“We had a wonderful midwife who asked in a whispered voice if we were hypnobirthing and she led us to a darkened room, put a mattress on the floor, got a ball etc and was just amazingly respectful and supportive.”~ Melinda, Perth Hypnobirthing Client

Several reviews of self-hypnosis for birth around the world and here in Australia have shown a reduced use of pharmaceutical analgesia, better birth outcomes, and a greater satisfaction with their birth in women who used hypnosis for birth compared with those who didn’t. Do your Google research, it is a great tool, but also ask around and read the birth stories of my clients.

“ Our son was born 3 weeks early, successfully using the hypnobirthing method for the second time. No epidural, no gas or air and not even some panadol. It was amazing and I wish I could go into labour every month haha. People think I’m crazy :).” – Nat, Perth Hypnobirthing Client
